Making farming easier through technology.
Oct 3rd 2014
Technology is introducing efficiency in agriculture, for example M-Farm’s mobile application that gives price information to farmers.
The co-founders of M-Farm developed the low-tech-application introducing transparency in agricultural trading by empowering the rural farmer to get the best price for their produce and what markets to go to and when. Unscrupulous middlemen often forced farmers to sell their produce at low prices because farmers had no way of knowing the market prices. In most incidences, farmers were forced to deeply discount their produce just to take some money home.
If a farmer wants to know the price of tomatoes in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, or Eldoret all he or she has to do is simply send a text message with the words JOIN FULL NAMES LOCATION they will receive a confirmation message. To get the price information send another text with the words PRICE TOMATOES NAIROBI and send to the short code 20255. They will receive an instant text giving the price of tomatoes in Nairobi. This gives the farmer power to negotiate for better prices and make decisions when and where to sell his or her produce. Farmers no longer have to walk miles to find out the price of products thanks to mobile technology
